Meaning of work

Work is any lawful activity that a person does to earn a living or get basic necessities.

People work to produce goods and services.

OR

Refers to the use of mental and physical skills in making things and providing services

WOK RELATED ACTIVITIES

There are two main types of work; these are:

  1. Physical work/Unskilled work

These are works that mostly involves the use of one’s physical strength. These includes: Farming, Lumbering, Plumbing, Carpentry, Mining, Building, Road constructions etc.

  1. Mental work/Skilled/Intellectual work

These are activities that mostly involve the use of mental skills (power) and less of physical strength. Such work includes: Teaching, Nursing, Administration etc.

IMPORTANCE OF WORK FOR SELF-DEVELOPMENT

1. Work provides the basic needs

2. It is a source of income for an individual. E.g. peasants earn money after selling of their crops harvest

3. Work improves the economic and social status of a family

4. Work is a means of social identity. E.g. society identifies an individual as a teacher, a lawyer, a nurse, a driver, etc

5. Work brings respect. A person who works hard is normally respected in the society.

6. Work helps to promote the cultural aspects of some communities. E.g. Makonde- carvings

7. Work helps to check crime or wrong doings in a society e.g. killing, drug abuse, robbery, etc

8. Work improves life standards of the individuals

9. Work increase the production of goods and services at individual and national level

Work helps to maintain the physical and mental health of individuals.

WORK FOR NATIONAL DEVELOPMENT

National development refers to the improvement in the life of the people in a country.

When people in a country work hard they increase the country’s production. This makes the economic grow.

IMPORTANCE OF WORK TO THE NATIONAL DEVELOPMENT

1. Work helps to reduce the number of people who are unemployed

2. Work facilitates the utilization of material and human resources in the country

3. It is easy to maintain peace and security if most people are working in a country

4. It assists in bringing about rapid national development when work is done properly

5. It is a source of national income

6. It helps the national to provide public services such as water, education, medical care etc

7. It promotes moral behaviors in the society.

INDICATORS OF INDIVIDUAL DEVELOPMENT

1. Having a good house, clothes, sufficient food etc

2. Material wellbeing

3. Having work and sufficient income

4. Being able accumulate capital

5. Being able to solve problems in all aspects

INDICATORS OF NATIONAL DEVELOPMENT

1. Availability of employment to people

2. Having enough source of labor

3. The ability to build adequate infrastructure eg railways, tarmac roads, etc

4. The ability to create internal and external markets where people can sell their goods.

UNDERDEVELOPMENT

Is the condition of either staying stationary or going back from a more advanced stage to a lower standard of living.

INDICATORS OF UNDERDEVELOPMENT

1. Inability to provide for ones basic essentials like food, shelter and clothes

2. Inability to accumulate capital

3. Remaining idle all the time without doing anything to earn an income

1. Limited number of skilled laborers

2. External and internal debts

3. Low level of education

4. Poor policies for running the country

5. Bad and insufficient infrastructures
