RITA was officially launched on June 23, 2006 and takes the place of what was called the Department of Handover of the General Counsel in the Attorney General’s Office, Ministry of Constitution and Law. 

It is an Agency under the Attorney General’s Office in the Ministry of Constitution and Law.

The history of RITA dates back to 1917 when the German colonial government enacted a birth and death registration law (Proclamation No. 15 of 1917 (People’s area). 

When the British took over Tanganyika (mainland Tanzania) from the Germans, they recognized the registration procedure of births and deaths prescribed by German law by registration under the Births and Deaths Act, 1920.

NB: It should be noted that under both colonial nations registration of births and deaths was not compulsory

Registration of Deaths

A death must be registered within 30 days, however the law allows late registration. The responsibility for registering deaths lies with the following:

👉The doctor who certified the death, or

👉Close relatives of the deceased who were present at the time of his death or were present at the end of his illness, or

👉The owner of the house, or the resident of the house, or anyone who took responsibility for burying the deceased.

1: Registration of death within 30 days

If the death has occurred in a hospital, health center or clinic, make sure you get a Funeral Permit. 

If a death occurs at home, report to the Village Executive Officer, or to the District Registrar to obtain a funeral permit. 

This should be done within 30 days.

👉Submit the funeral permit to the Registrar of the district in whose jurisdiction the death occurred.

👉Pay the required fee to obtain the certificate (the current fee is Tsh. 7,000/=).

2: Delayed death registration

  • Fill in the death information in the digital system and then attach the supporting documents (memoirs of the family meeting and letters from the relevant government authorities such as Ward, Executive Officer, Village Executive Officer) to confirm the death.
  • They did not disclose the identity of the applicant
  • Letter of identification of the Applicant from the Ward Executive.
  • Pay the required fee if the death is more than 30 days and less than 10 years, the current fee is Tsh. 8,000/=
  • Pay the required fee if the death is more than 10 years old, the fee is Tsh. 20,000/=.

3: Verification of Death Certificates

  • Submit a copy of the relevant certificate.
  • Pay the required fee (the current fee is Tsh. 6000/=).

4: Registration of Death that occurred abroad 

  • Submit a copy of the death certificate from the country where the death occurred.
  • Passport of the deceased
  • Medical statement/certificate
  • A letter from the Tanzanian Embassy of the country where the death occurred notifying RITA of the death.
  • Whistleblower ID
  • Pay the required fee (the current fee is Tsh. 30,000/=).

5: Making corrections to the certificate

  • Submit a correction request.
  • Attach documents to support your request.
