The National Examinations Council of Tanzania (NECTA) is Government Institution which was established by the Parliamentary Act No. 21 of 1973.

NECTA is responsible for the administration of all National Examinations in Tanzania.

The decision to establish NECTA was a follow-up of an earlier move, in April 1971, when Tanzania Mainland pulled out of the East African Examinations Council (EAEC) to conduct her own examinations.

The Certificate of Secondary Education Examination (CSEE) marks the end of four years of secondary education. This summative evaluation shows the effectiveness of the education system in general and the education delivery system in particular.

The candidates’ responses to the examination questions strongly indicate what the education system managed to offer to the students in their four years of secondary education.

The candidates’ item response analysis report on the CSEE in every subject has been prepared to give feedback to students, teachers, parents, policy makers and the public in general on how the candidates responded to the examination questions and how they were required to respond.

The analysis presented in this report will help various educational stakeholders to understand the reasons which led to the performance in the every subject.

It also points out factors which led the candidates fail to score high marks on the questions, including failure to identify the requirement of the questions, lack of drawing skills, lack of mathematical skills and poor knowledge of the topics.

The views provided in this report will help educational administrators, school managers, teachers, and students to identify appropriate methods to improve the candidates’ performance in future
