CONCEPT OF BEHAVIOUR

Behavior can be defined as all actions and reactions of objects or organism usually in relation to the surrounding environment

HUMAN BEHAVIOUR

This implies ones actions, manners and attitudes towards other people. A person’s behavior can change due to his/her mood, place or the person he/she is dealing with.

Mood: when a person is happy, he/she behaves differently from the way he/she behaves when angry or sad.

Place: a student in classroom behaves differently from the way he/she behaves in play-ground

Person one is dealing with: a student behaves differently when dealing with fellow students or friends from the way he/she behaves when dealing with teachers, parents, strangers etc

TYPES OF BEHAVIOUR

There are two major types of behavior, these are:

  1. Proper behavior
  2. Improper behavior

1: PROPER BEHAVIOUR

This is the kind of behavior that is acceptable to all members of the family, community and society. Examples cooperation, solidarity, love, charity, kindness, etc.

ELEMENTS OF PROPER BEHAVIOUR

1. Love, peace and security among people

2. Respect for law and rules guiding society

3. Cooperation

4. Polite language when speaking to other people

5. Being responsible

6. Obedience and communication

7. Respect for one self, others, property and authority

8. Honesty i.e. always telling the truth and never cheat.

IMPORTANCE OF PROPER BEHAVIOUR IN SOCIETY

1. It help to reduce crime and evils in society

2. It brings a culture of unity and cooperation

3. A peaceful environment stimulates economic development in society

4. It helps to develop a sense of love, respect and solidarity among society members

5. It contributes to the stability of government and the state in general

2: IMPROPER BEHAVIOUR

Is the behavior which is not acceptable in the society. Example of improper behavior: use of abusive language, fighting, prostitution, cheating, laziness, etc.

CAUSES OF IMPROPER BEHAVIOUR

1. Lack of parental care and guidance

2. Bad peer groups

3. Poverty

4. Excessive alcohol drinking

5. The mass media

6. Drug abuse

ELEMENTS OF IMPROPER BEHAVIOUR

1. Indiscipline

2. Corruption, dishonesty and disobedience

3. Unlawful acts, such as killing and stealing

CONSEQUENCES OF IMPROPER BEHAVIOUR

MEASURES TO CORRECT IMPROPER BEHAVIOUR

1. Mass education on good behavior among members of the society

2. Law enforcement e.g. punishing to law breakers i.e. thieves, bandits and corrupt people

3. Family planning education

4. Parents need to be closer to their children and spend quality time with them, counseling and guiding them.

5. The importation of pornographic materials should be banned

6. Schools and colleges should educate young people on how to behave properly in society

RESPONSIBLE DECISION-MAKING

A decision is the choice which an individual makes after thinking through different options in a given situation.

Responsible Decision-making is the cognitive process of selecting a course of action from among many alternatives.

STEPS FOR MAKING A DECISION

In making decision, there are clear steps to be followed, these are:

  1. Define the problem/ identify the problem.

We should ask ourselves if there is a problem and how we can solve it correctly

  1. Generating possible solutions/ alternatives

At this stage the person collects information on the possible solution to his/her problem.

  1. Stating the criteria to use

At this stage the person analyzes the principles to consider in selecting a particular solution. This means that he/she think advantages and disadvantages of each solution listed down.

  1. To evaluate is to form an opinion of something after careful consideration. In this stage, a person forms an opinion on the available alternatives in order to make a decision.
  2. Making a decision or implement the chosen alternatives. Here a person selects the best solution and acts on it.
  3. Checking the results. This involves assessing the choices made to determine whether the decision that was made has worked to solve the problem.

IMPORTANCE OF DECISION MAKING RESPONSIBLE DECISIONS

1. It ensures the careful use of the limited resources for the development of society

2. It helps to build a sense of commitment to decision made on behalf of the people.

3. It bring a sense of making a collective effort

4. It is one element of a democratic society

FACTORS INFLUENCING BEHAVIOUR

Factors which affect human behavior are:

1. Some characteristics are inherited by children from their parents who influence behavior. E.g. bravery, anger or aggression

2. Peer group. Some behaviors are acquired by individual from peer groups

3. Influence of technology. Changes in technology especially communication technology, play major role in moulding behavior of people especially adolescents

4. Lack of employment. When people remain idle, they tend to get involved in improper behavior such as robbery, rape, theft, drug abuse and smoking marijuana

5. Influence of parents. Parenting styles influence the behavior of children. Aggressive parents may influence their children’s behavior as well as kind parents may transmit kindness to their children.
